Piko Provisions - Behind the Name

More than just a fun name to say, Piko is a Hawaiian word filled with deep meaning. Best expressed as "connection," it represents the bond between parents and children, the link to generations of family, and our relationship to the land and food that nourishes us. For us, it captures our commitment to growing families with the absolute best foods and strengthening Hawaii's future.

Stories of Stewardship

In producing “Stories of Stewardship” Ethan led a dynamic team in the ideation and creation of a three part film series from start to finish. Through working with global design agency, Ocupop, and Hawaii film maker Jonathan Keao of Sky Blue Pictures they were able to create a stunning, engaging, integrated content campaign which helped further the brand awareness and mission of Kunoa Cattle Company.

Stories of Stewardship Episode 3: Zanga Schutte

This edition takes us to Kamuela on the Big Island, where Zanga Schutte raises Angus cattle at Z-Bar Ranch.

When Zanga started in the business, he says it was just a numbers game for him. The more cattle he could raise, the more money he could make. But through watching and listening to other ranchers, he realized the importance of taking a more holistic approach.

Now, he’s focused on being a good steward of the land, which ensures his cattle have nourishing food. Instead of yelling and chasing after his cattle, he’s gentle with them and is more attentive to their needs. It shows in his herd’s gentle temperament —and in the beef. “You get more tender beef because they’re not stressed,” he says.

Stories of Stewardship Episode 2: Don & Alex Winters

Our latest story features Don Winters and his grandson Alex Winters, who raise cattle in Waimea. Don has seen the ranching business evolve over his lifetime. For years he operated a “cow-calf” operation, which meant the cows he raised were all sent to the mainland. Today, with the resurgence of full-cycle beef production in Hawaii, the cattle he raises stay local and feeds his neighbors.

With this change and by practicing rotational grazing techniques, the Winters are seeing the land improve and better grasses return. Better land means better cattle. It’s a virtuous cycle that supports not only a family business, but a way of life and a promise for generations to come.

Stories of Stewardship Episode 1: Bobby Farias

“Stories of Stewardship” is a video series profiling the ranchers and farmers who are caring for Hawaii’s land and animals to produce food that is healthy for our people and communities.

Kunoa Cattle Company co-founder Bobby Farias employs holistic planned grazing practices that regenerate the soil and produce healthier animals at his Kauai ranch. Bobby emphasizes that everyone can take part in rebuilding our land and Hawaii’s food security by choosing to buy local food. “We have the privilege of living in Hawaii, so it’s our job to leave it better than we found it,” he says.
